01 / COME AS YOU ARE

Lessons built
around you

We’ll start with the songs you love and what you’d like to do on guitar. From there, I’ll build a plan around your goals, with lessons designed to spark curiosity and get you excited to play.

SMALL HUMANS, BIG CURIOSITY

For the kids.

Make some sounds. Find a rhythm. Try something wonderfully wonky. Play is part of learning, and little discoveries count.

  • Get comfortable with the guitar
  • Explore rhythms, melodies, and first chords
  • Build confidence, one little win at a time
  • Play music they love, learn to play with others, and write their own songs.

BIG HUMANS, FIRST CHORDS

For the grown-ups.

That guitar in the corner? That song you keep replaying? Let's give them some time together. Starting with the basics? You’re in the right place.

  • Find your chords and get a strum going
  • Work toward music you actually want to play
  • Make practice feel doable in real life
  • Work toward playing like your favorite artists or writing songs like them.

02 / YOUR GUITAR PERSON

Hey, I'm Weston.

Hi, I’m Weston, a musician and teacher based in Mill Valley. Teaching children is a big part of my everyday work with JAMaROO. I’ve also taught creative activities at the Esalen Institute. I’ve been playing in bands and writing and recording my own music for years. I bring that experience to patient, encouraging guitar lessons for beginners of all ages.

My own listening includes indie rock and folk: Elliott Smith, Alex G, Oasis, Slow Pulp, The Backseat Lovers, The Kooks, Phoebe Bridgers, The Beatles, and Bob Dylan. I also like heavier music, including Deftones and Nirvana. Your lessons start with the music that interests you.

Having your own guitar is best for practice, but if you don’t have one yet, reach out. I may be able to bring one for you to try.

MUSIC & EVERYDAY LIFE

How music can positively affect you or your child’s life

Music can be a rewarding way to learn, create, and connect.

For kids

  • Rhythm, timing, and patterns. Clapping a beat, repeating a strum, and hearing when a melody changes give children practice recognizing musical patterns and staying in time.
  • Coordinated hands, attentive ears. Fretting and strumming ask the hands to do different jobs while the ears check the result.

In a small 15-month keyboard study, children’s gains in finger skills and distinguishing melodies and rhythms were linked with structural changes in movement- and hearing-related brain regions.

  • A way to express themselves. Choosing songs, shaping melodies, and trying their own lyrics give children concrete ways to turn ideas and feelings into music.

For adults

  • A workout for listening and timing. Learning a song combines remembering chord sequences, coordinating movements, and listening for the next change.

In a small randomized study of adults, 11 weeks of piano training improved detection of whether sights and sounds occurred together.

  • A creative outlet that’s yours. Turn a feeling into a chord progression, learn a song that matters to you, or write a few lines of your own. Practice gives you dedicated time to make something personal.
  • Music you can share. Learn songs to play with friends, accompany someone singing, or share at a gathering. Listening and keeping time together make music a shared activity.
